New Lights at Keelby

Back to our website: Village Stores
David has been busy installing LED panels in the suspended ceiling at Keelby. They replace the old fluorescent light units, use only 10% of the power and last for 30 years! They are surprisingly easy to fit - but just to be sure David got an electrician to wire in the first one.

David appears on BBC TV News talking about the A18 Melton Ross Railway Bridge

A reporter from the BBC interviewed David and the owners of Barney's Cafe about the roadworks on the A18 Melton Ross Railway Bridge.

In July 2013 European rules changed, and the bridge was reclassified as "weak". Lincolnshire County Council introduced a single -lane, traffic-light controlled contraflow on the bridge, and put up signs to divert all HGVs around that part of the A18. This had a huge impact on the passing trade at Great Limber.

During all this time no work appears to have been done to strengthen the bridge and reopen it.

Let's hope this TV appearance will speed things up!

Tobacco Display Ban

As from 6th April all small shops must join the tobacco display ban. At Keelby we are keeping the door on our tobacco display closed unless serving or re-stocking, and at Limber tobacco is under the counter, and the display cabinet is filled with medicines. This is the new law.

Partial Solar Eclipse

We've had some really windy weather in March - right at the beginning, and then again at the end! All of this and a partial eclipse too - quite an eventful month! David constructed a pinhole camera from a crisp box, and shone an image of the eclipse onto a sheet of paper for the girls who work at the hairdressers next door!

Dijon Mustard Now in Stock

English mustard is strongly flavoured. In the 70s Colemans made a milder type they called French mustard but the EU banned it, as it wasn't French. Mustard is made in France at Dijon and Meaux, but normally from Canadian seed. American mustard, invented by G.J. French, is milder (as turmeric is added) & is known as "yellow mustard" in the USA (to distinguish it from other mustards which are also yellow). It is also normally made from Canadian seed. It's all rather confusing!!!!

Mothering Sunday

Mothering Sunday this week was really busy - we had some great value chocs and cakes, and a big range of special cards, too! We're always surprised at how many cards we actually sell on Sunday - some people really do leave it all to the last minute!

More sad news!

Back to our website: Village Stores

It seems barely a week passes before we hear of another funeral. We learned on Thursday that Brian Vickers had passed away, after a long battle with cancer. Brian and his wife were very popular landlords at the New Inn, Great Limber in 2005. Brian will be sadly missed!

Valentine's Day

Back to our website: Village Stores

More sad news - it was Mrs Raspin's funeral on Monday 16th February. She was a stalwart of the village, and worked in the Limber shop during the 1980s - she'll be sadly missed. But on a hopeful note, we have just celebrated Valentine's day with a super meal at the New Inn, cooked by Ian Matfin, Limber's own celebrity chef.

Since the Yarborough Estate refurbished and reopened the New Inn after 18 months' closure, the place has earned a wonderful reputation under Ian & Lisa's guidance. We hope we will soon be seeing stars!

Welcome to February

Back to our website: Village Stores

It's been a cold snowy January, and things at Limber have been quiet because we are surrounded by road works!

The railway bridge at Melton Ross on the A18 has had "temporary" traffic lights since July 2013 - now Lincolnshire Council have decided to dig up the A18 at Keelby (“. due to start 29th January." but no sign of anyone actually doing anything!). The busses are being stopped at Keelby until mid-February because of this work. It is almost as if the County Council are trying to starve us out!!!

Je suis Charlie - part II

Back to our website: Village Stores

We were not able to get any copies of Charlie Hebdo,  but David was invited to speak on the BBC Radio. Our hearts go out to the folks in France.

Je suis Charlie

Back to our website: Village Stores

Following the news of the terrible attack on the offices of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo on January 7th, we hope to get some copies of Charlie Hebdo for the shop.

We will give them away for free, but ask if you would make a donation towards their appeal fund - we can take the money and pass it on through their website. Thankyou!
